Cultural Semiotics in The Boof-e koor

Abstract

Culture was one of the first topics that was addressed in the field of semiotics. Language, society, and especially culture are among the reasons for the distinction of human beings from other creatures, and theorists have always paid special attention to it. Cultural semiotics has a comprehensive view of this category. Since it is not possible to imagine an independent culture, cultural semiotics deals with the conflict and interaction between cultures. Hedayat is one of the contemporary writers whose cultural concerns and the discussion of culture and society are seriously discussed in all his works.In the meantime, his boof-e koor is an area in which his cultural perspective has a special manifestation. The Boof-e koor has been compiled in two parts and has looked at Iranian culture, cultural confrontation and ways of confronting the non-cultural rather than dealing with the ethnic, religious, and social issues of that day and the past of Iran.This research is based on cultural semiotics and the theories of Lotman and the members of the Tarto-Moscow school, and the result is that Hedayat has confronted the other with the cultural pattern that he has throughout the story, by retranslating the discourse of the other/enemy, using the I-I discourse, and creating his central space and semiotic sphere, he has been able to overcome the other.With the paradox that he establishes between morality and immorality, he charges the work from the immoral cases in order to overcome it in the end with the time of his cultural explosion.
