A Rhizomatic Reading of the Poem “Let Us Believe in the Beginning of the Cold Season” by Forough Farrokhzad Based on the Views of Deleuze and Guattari

Abstract

The increasing complexity of modern human life and the entrance of these complexities into the realms of art and literature have attracted the attention of theorists and critics to the invention of new and effective methods for discovering and analyzing these complexities. Among these, Deleuze and Guattari's rhizomatic theory is one of the theories that has gained a special place and many followers in research across various disciplines. Its associated concepts such as becoming, the body without organs, deterritorialization and reterritorialization, fluidity of meaning, machine of desire, and so forth have been utilized by researchers in different fields of study.

In this research, we attempted to employ this approach through a descriptive-analytical method to read Forough Farrokhzad's poem "Let Us Believe in the Beginning of the Cold Season," one of the most prominent contemporary poets, to clarify how the rhizomatic reading can identify and analyze nonlinear connections and fluid meanings in this poem. Furthermore, how this reading contributes to manifesting the dynamic identity and social processes within it.

The results showed that the poet, in this poem, through nonlinear imagery and multiple themes, represents a rhizomatic network of multifaceted meanings in which identity and desires are produced fluidly and without a center. This structure aligns with Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of the body without organs and, through the use of minority literature and becoming, seeks to discover and construct the feminine social identity she aims for.
