The concept of death-wish in the modern societies is an intellectual trend that challenges an individual's approach to the surrounding environment and can significantly impact the individual's lifestyle and that of their peers. Playwrights such as Marsha Norman and Gholamhossein Saedi have explored characters' conscious confrontations with death in their works, particularly in the plays "Night, Mother" and "Dast Balay-e Dast." These characters are portrayed as either death-wish or as opposers to death-wish. This study aims to analyze this semantic contrast within the narrative discourse of these two plays using a descriptive-analytical method. By conducting a comparative study of the death-wish motif as the central axis of these two plays and examining their themes through narrative elements such as characters, plot, time, and setting, we aim to answer how two playwrights from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds have addressed the theme of death-wish in their works and what narrative differences they have employed. Our findings indicate that Norman, by utilizing temporal-spatial continuity and a single opposing character to the death-wish character, has delved deeper into the causes of death-wish compared to Saedi, thus aligning the narrative characterization and narrative components of her play with its theme.
