Peter Blau’s social exchange theory analyzes human relationships based on resources, power, and status, and explains the stages of relationship development from individual exchanges to legitimacy and social transformation. In the novel Bazi-ye Akhar-e Banu by Balqis Soleimani, the interactions among characters can be examined through this theoretical lens. This article aims to investigate the formation, evolution, and dissolution of relationships between Gol-Banu and the three main characters—Heydar, Saeed, and Ebrahim Rahami—focusing on power, status, and social legitimacy. The research employs a descriptive-analytical method. The main research questions are: How do cultural, economic, and social capitals create differences in status and power among the characters in Bazi-ye Akhar-e Banu? What mechanisms lead to the transformation of inequalities and changes in relationship structures? Findings indicate that Gol-Banu’s cultural capital and literacy give her an advantage over Heydar’s violence, Saeed’s cultural capital and social status become tools of power and domination, and her relationship with Rahami gains legitimacy through economic capital, administrative influence, and customary norms. Ultimately, the collapse of these relationships occurs due to stronger rivals, social pressures, and political crises. The study concludes that the novel illustrates how the interplay of various capitals, inequalities, and social legitimacy produces cycles of power, domination, resistance, and transformation in human relationships.
