Poetry has long attracted the attention of philosophers. Such attention has sometimes taken the form of criticism and rejection, and at other times that of defense and affirmation. Philosophers such as Plato, on the basis of their philosophical foundations, subjected poetry to critical scrutiny. In contrast to the Platonic approach, however, Immanuel Kant offers a more affirmative account of poetry and seeks to clarify the transcendental conditions that make it possible. This article aims to articulate the philosophical foundations of Kant’s understanding of poetry on the basis of the critique of the power of Judgement. From Kant’s perspective, poetry is not merely a literary or linguistic phenomenon; rather, it possesses transcendental dimensions that correspond to his Copernican revolution in the domain of knowledge and find their realisation within the transcendental structure of consciousness. One of the central points in Kant’s account is that poetry must have no end beyond itself. In this respect, poetry resembles moral action in Kant’s philosophy, where the end of the moral act lies within the act itself and no external purpose can serve as its determining ground. Furthermore, Kant connects poetry and the poet with the notion of genius, distinguishing between poetry devoid of spirit. Finally, this article seeks to emphasize and elaborate the conceptual elements in Kant’s aesthetics that may open new horizons for contemporary theories of progressive poetry.
