Textual editing is one of the most important branches of textual scholarship and manuscript studies, concerned with the reconstruction and restoration of classical texts on the basis of manuscript evidence. Despite the publication and translation of numerous works on the teaching of textual editing in Persian, critical and comparative evaluations of these resources have received limited scholarly attention. Employing a descriptive-analytical method and a comparative approach, the present study examines major contemporary Persian educational resources on textual editing and analyzes the views presented in them with regard to such issues as the definition and purpose of textual editing, editorial methods, the role of the editor, the copy-text, and variant readings.
The findings indicate that these works share a common objective—namely, the production of a text as close as possible to its earliest attainable form. However, they differ significantly in their theoretical foundations, terminological systems, classification of editorial methods, and explanations of the editor’s role and the limits of editorial intervention. The study argues that the principal challenge in the teaching of textual editing in Persian is not a lack of educational resources, but rather the absence of conceptual and methodological coherence in the articulation of this discipline.
