"Electronic literature/ٍE-Lit" represents an ontological rupture in the nature of the literary, emerging from the transition from a "static material object" (paper) to a "dynamic procedural event" (software). This novel ecosystem poses profound methodological challenges to the tradition of literary criticism—a discipline honed for the semantic interpretation of print texts, yet suffering from a structural blindness toward the technical, algorithmic, and interactive dimensions of electronic literature. In pursuit of a resolution, the present study adopts N. Katherine Hayles’s "Media-Specific Analysis" (MSA) as its overarching theoretical framework, seeking to expand it into a multi-layered critical methodology. This article argues that the emergent computational platform destabilizes the dominant conception of "literature as a purely abstract entity," thereby foregrounding the "medium" and the "materiality" through which literature is executed. Consequently, the media-specific analysis of electronic literature necessitates a structural descent from the surface of representation (the formal and content-based elements visible on the screen) to the underlying strata of the literary machine. To achieve this, by synthesizing approaches from "Critical Code Studies," "Platform Studies," "Software Studies," and "Interface Studies," this paper proposes that these disciplines serve as the bedrock of any computational media-specific critique, analyzing the literary work across the four levels of "code," "platform," "software," and "interface." Ultimately, the application of this media-specific analysis is expected to redirect the critic’s focus from the mere interpretation of literary form and content toward a material critique of the medium within which the digital literary event is actualized.
