This study seeks to account for the cognitive mechanisms underlying semantic multiplicity in Nima Yushij’s poem “A Not-New Story.” The central research problem concerns whether the poem’s romantic, ethical, and socio-political interpretations stem merely from its literary indeterminacy, or whether they are grounded in a systematic organization of linguistic and conceptual structures. The theoretical framework is drawn from Ronald Langacker’s Cognitive Grammar, particularly the dimensions of construal, including specification, prominence, figure–ground alignment, focusing, perspective, and mental scanning.
Adopting a qualitative, text-based analytical method, the study proceeds through four operational stages: identifying the poem’s key lexical and clausal elements; determining their associated conceptual domains within a domain matrix; analyzing figure–ground organization and focal adjustments to examine the distribution of conceptual prominence; and investigating patterns of sequential and summary scanning in relation to narrative dynamism and temporal configuration.
The findings indicate that the poem’s central elements are linguistically encoded in ways that enable the activation of multiple conceptual domains. Differences in prominence assignment, participant profiling, and temporal organization systematically guide distinct interpretive trajectories. The study demonstrates that the poem’s semantic multilayeredness is not a product of accidental ambiguity, but rather the outcome of a carefully structured conceptual organization that directs cognitive processing. Accordingly, Nima Yushij’s innovation may be understood not only at the formal or metrical level, but also at the level of cognitive structuring and construal of meaning.
